This is before the social media explosion and many companies attitude was still one of isolationism and privacy. Well, a lot sure has changed since then. Coinciding with Obama's pledge for transparency, forward-thinking companies are opening themselves up to their customers and the public at large. The bread and butter of Competitive Intelligence has always been primary research. Phone calls, trade shows, and industry networking some of the main techniques. And while the way competitive intelligence is done is shifting, personal contact is still the best way to gather information.
So how is this era of transparency going to affect how CI is conducted? Will it make it easier because more doors are unlocked (figuratively of course, I'm not talking about catsuits here)? Or will it become more difficult because the faces of companies will now be hyper-aware of those trying to pry the secrets?

Approximately 860,000 Americans used ecstasy for the first time in 2006, which is a significant increase from the 615,000 first-time users reported in 2005. Most (70.1 percent) of these new users were 18 or older; and among past-year initiates aged 12 to 49, the average age at initiation in 2006 was 20.6 years.
